Explore Devon
The Dartmoor national park is an area of moorland in the centre of the Devon. The area has a magical beauty and abounds with myths and legends. It is reputedly the haunt of pixies, a headless horseman, a mysterious pack of 'spectral hounds', and a large black dog. During the Great Thunderstorm of 1638, Dartmoor was even said to have been visited by the Devil.
Many landmarks have ancient legends and ghost stories associated with them, such as Jay's Grave, the ancient burial site at Childe's Tomb, and a rock pile called Bowerman's Nose.
A few stories have emerged in recent decades, such as the 'hairy hands', that are said to attack travellers on the B3212 near Two Bridges.
Dartmoor has also inspired a number of artists and writers, such as Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle in The Hound of the Baskervilles, Eden Phillpotts, Beatrice Chase, Agatha Christie

Walking around Dartmoor
There are almost 450 miles of footpaths and bridleways on Dartmoor, and although much of the moor is in private ownership the “right to roam” has been in existence on the Moor since 1985. It provides the full range of walking from leisurely strolls to punishing route marches up and over the “tors” large hills topped with granite bedrock. These form the basis for the annual Ten Tors Challenge. The highest point on Dartmoor is High Willhays, at 621m.
Things to do around Dartmoor
As well as walking, Dartmoor is also a popular venue for other outdoor pursuits, from fishing to kayaking and canoeing. There are also many other places to see and things to do in and around Dartmoor, including Castle Drogo, in Drewsteignton. There are also many great places to eat the drink, such as the Warren House Inn, the highest inn in south west England, and Blacks Deli, in Chagford.
